USGS Reports Magnitude 70 Event

A powerful magnitude 7.0 earthquake has struck off the coast of Russia's remote Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering a tsunami warning.

The epicenter of the quake was located approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the largest city on the peninsula, at a depth of 25 kilometers (15 miles), according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The earthquake occurred at 7:20 p.m. local time (10:20 a.m. UTC) on November 20th, 2022.

Tsunami Warning Issued

Following the earthquake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) issued a tsunami warning for the coasts of Russia, Japan, and the United States.

The PTWC warned that waves of up to 1 meter (3 feet) could hit the Russian coast near the epicenter, while smaller waves were possible as far away as California and Alaska.

There have been no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries as a result of the earthquake or tsunami.
